Medellin, Colombia's second largest city, is known as the
"City of Eternal Spring" for its constant mild weather and beautiful
flowers. Originally founded as La Reina Mariana de Austria in 1,674
changed its name to Medellin.
The city grew as the region's wealth of natural resources
(specially coffee and gold) became a very important part of the national economy.
Today, Medellin is still an economic engine and crucial to Colombia's development.
The paisas, as the locals are affectionately called, are
known for their entrepreneurship and hospitality. Also famous for their celebrations, many
festivals can be experienced around the year. The Feria de las Flores is a parade
where "silleteros" display their flowers in colorful and beautiful arrangements
around the city. The bullfighting tradition lives in Medellin, with the Feria
Taurina de La Candelaria, and the traditional Festival de la Trova is where local
musicians and singers get together and display their creativity and humor.
Medellin offers many cultural possibilities, like the Modern
Art Museum*, Anthropological Museum, Museo de Antioquia and the Museo Zea housing a very
extensive collection of Fernando Botero's art.
Other attractions include the Palacio Nacional, the Santafe
Zoo and many world-class restaurants, cafes and clubs.
