Rich in natural resources Colombia's economy is heavily
dependent upon them.
Colombia's main exports includeits well known coffee, petroleum and petroleum
products, emeralds, fruits, flowers, iron and steel, textiles and apparel.
While inflation has been reduced and kept comparatively low,
unemployment has risen to about 20% in the previous years. Security issues have kept
many investors away, with great economic cost to the country. Hopes of recovery are pegged
to the prospects of peace.
Colombia's official currency is the Peso. ( $1 US Dollar =
$ 2,700 Pesos)
Government
Colombia is a republic with a very long democratic
tradition. The country is divided into 32 departments
and one capital district, Santa Fe de Bogotá.
The Chief of State and Head of Government is thePresident,
elected to four-year nonconsecutive terms by direct national vote.
Colombia's current President isAlvaro Uribe Velez. Congress
consists of Senate (102 seats) and House of Representatives (163 seats) and members
are elected to four-year terms. The minimum votingage is 18 and suffrage is
universal.
The Colombian Constitution was adopted in 1991. The National Holiday is July
20th.
